April 2016 Talk Evening

Sunday 17th April 2016

Last week was this month’s talk evening which is the focus of todays update. Topics covered on these evenings sometimes discuss real railways, but mostly focus on an aspect of railway modelling, and this time soldering metal kits was the subject.

While ready to run models have improved over the years and more variety of different products are available covering lots of engine and wagon types, you may find that you want a model of something that isn’t available ready to run yet. There are however lots of kits available using different materials, so this latest talk was to explain the basics of building metal kits by soldering them together.

A few members of the club have never attempted etched brass kits before, so this talk was very informative for those that may consider giving one a go, but never knew where to start. With a few short practical demonstrations and a number visual aids to help explain some of the concepts, the basic starting points were covered and hopefully, after some practice on some spare brass, we may see a few more members soldering some etched brass kits together.

The photo below shows an example of an etched brass wagon kit before painting in 1:32 scale on the club’s Gauge 1 test track. The kit is an etched brass Loriot M built to Diagram G14 produced by Mercian Models with a 1:32 scale die-cast Russian T34 Tank from the Forces of Valor range used as a load.
