January 2018 Update

Sunday 28th January 2018

The first month of 2018 has brought with it the usual activities at the Nailsea and District Model Railway Club.

To start the year off, we had a film show evening where we watched segments from DVDs brought along by a couple of our members. Following on from then, we have continued the year with two modelling evenings where Club members progressed with their own projects, worked on Club layout Nailsea Wharf or discussed aspects of railways, both real and model.

We’ve also had the Roundy Round test track operating on one evening so far this year featuring engines from across the world. The three photos below show a tiny selection of the items of rolling stock that have operated on the test track so far this year, beginning with a HO scale SD40T-2 built by Electro-Motive Diesel for the Rio Grande Railroad in America.

Moving away from America and over to Australia, the next photo features a coal train pulled by a South Maitland Railways 10 Class 2-8-2 tank engine, built for the East Greta Coal Company in New South Wales by Beyer, Peacock and Company of Manchester, England.

This last photo taken of the test track shows a meeting of coal trains from New South Wales in Australia and South Wales in Great Britain. The above South Maitland Railways 10 Class is pictured alongside a Great Western Railway 5600 Class tank engine, which was specifically built to operate in the Welsh valleys to replace the older locomotives inherited during the 1923 Grouping.

The final photo for this update shows an O gauge kit part way through construction. The nuclear flask wagon show below was being given a dry assembly to ensure all the parts fitted correctly before being glued together. These wagons are used for transporting active nuclear material between nuclear power stations and spent fuel reprocessing facilities.
